On display are eight large ink drawings with watercolour washes executed by Giani in 1813 during his stay at Montmorency, a town north of Paris where Napoleon’s Secretary of State for the Kingdom of Italy, the lawyer from Bologna Antonio Aldini had bought a splendid villa that he commissioned the painter to decorate. This assortment of drawings is part of the collection of the Museo Napoleonico which for some years has made one of its priorities exhibitions and further research on its important collections of drawings and prints.
Guided tour in Italian by Fabio Benedettucci.
These works executed by Giani had a very brief existence: after being heavily damaged by the Prussian occupying troops following the fall of Napoleon, the Villa Aldini was destroyed in 1817. The drawings by Felice Giani, which depict the palace and the surrounding park are almost the only representations that exist of the lost villa and grounds.
To complete the exhibition there are a series of drawings from the collection of the Museo di Roma. These are inspired by classical culture and are representative of a large part of the career of the artist. They help the visitor to comprehend the great talents of this artist.
