Gioacchino Murat and Carolina Bonaparte
The first to arrive, in 1802, was General Murat, the husband of Caroline Bonaparte, who was travelling towards Naples.
He stayed in the Palazzo Sciarra on the Corso for a brief period, enjoying the generous hospitality of Cardinal Consalvi, the Torlonia family and the Borghese family, who organised a splendid banquet for him in their villa on the outskirts of the city, held in what is known as the Lanfrancho hall, decorated with masterpieces of classical sculpture, now in the Louvre.
